gill banks LSDC

Profile

Gill’s work is concerned with the quiet, reflective beauty found in the subtle traces and random marks left behind by the passage of time. Peeling paint on a much mended shed, worn floor tiles in a fourteenth century church, bricked up windows in a derelict building or the fleeting marks and rhythms emerging and disappearing as the tide ebbs and flows. These small, almost insignificant imperfections and irregularities in our everyday surroundings hold deep memories and connections for her of times and lives now past. The beautiful coastline of North Norfolk offers constant inspiration and recently Holy Island in Northumberland where the much repaired, upturned herrng boats used as sheds on the edge of the harbour have become the starting point for her most recent work.

Working with dyes, discharge processes, stitched resists, screenprinting, paint and hand stitch, Gill creates sensitively pieced and stitched work reflecting the wear and tear of life and time passing.

Gill completed the HE Diploma in Stitched Textiles at East Berkshire College where she gained a Distinction.
