elizabeth sayers LSDC

Profile

Elizabeth's passion is landscape and inspiration comes from walking in the countryside, watching the play of light and shadow through the trees; observing the light at different times of day, season, and weather. Her aim is to distil that rich experience to its simplest elements of light, shade, line, and colour; using textiles to evoke a sense of place and the feeling of being there. Her pieces also represent an inner landscape, an emotional response to the natural world.

Images are built up on a range of silk fabrics, using a variety of techniques including hand dying, batik wax and Shibori. The resulting images are layered, appliquéd, quilted and stitched to give the effect of light and shadow, depth, space and texture.

The process is meditative and Elizabeth loves the unpredictability of the methods which force her to respond afresh and renew her vision at each stage.

Elizabeth has recently moved to West Dorset and is exploring this beautiful countryside of woodland, hills, fields and coast. She will be experimenting with different fabrics and techniques to evoke these very different landscapes through the seasons.

If you would like to commission a piece inspired by your favourite landscape, please talk to Elizabeth who is also happy to give public talks about her work and the methods she uses.
